“How to BE a Fundraiser” is not the question most fundraisers ask. “How do I raise money?” seems more urgent. There’s so much good material on how to fundraise. But I say Focus on being; the doing will emerge.
I believe two things are true about being a fundraiser:
It’s not about you;
It’s all about you.
By that, I mean our work is about the donors, and the mission they choose to support. But true service to donors is only possible when we’ve done the work of understanding ourselves: our motivations, needs, desires, and gifts.
For anyone in philanthropy, the calling, paradoxes, mindset and practice of fundraising are worth thinking about. Your self-awareness is the key to it all.
Here’s the best part: you don’t get just my thoughts— I invite top-notch professionals to write a response to each one of my posts. (These are cool people that I like, and look up to!) You will be part of a fresh, fun and feisty conversation about this life of fundraising.
Subscribers can find past conversations in my publication archives. And you can join in, sharing your thoughts and experiences. Sound good? I welcome you.
